The team ended practice everyday with the saying, “Working everyday to be the best in 3A.” And that’s exactly what the NV Lady Raiders did. They proved to be the best girls’ team in 3A. They also took 3rd place in the Hiawatha Invitational Tournament, and were named the Big 7 League Champs for 2002-2003.
Working hard on both sides of the court the team proved to be an advantage when entering the Championship game in Hutchinson. The team was lead by eight seniors who were out all four years of high school.
“I thought we really didn’t have one or two leaders, they all led during different parts of the season,” Coach Terpening said.
Spending all winter long together, they got to know each other very well.
“Our teams strongest point was probably how we all got along so well and our team unity,” Kelsey, sr., said.

Triumph…The stuff of dreams
By Renee Winkler
Working hard to make dreams come true is the story of life. The Lady Raider basketball teams worked
beyond belief and made their dreams become reality. Starting with a goal to make it to the top, led to a
season full of hardships, memories, and most importantly success.
Making an excellent team doesn’t happen with little work or effort on a basketball player’s part. The
varsity girl’s team devoted hours, both mentally and physically, to the sport.
The season opener against Wamego, set the pace for the rest of the season. A game full of fast moving
plays, hustle, and determination. The season continued with the same pattern of victories.
While not every game was a walk in the park for the girl’s basketball team, communications, sacrifice,
and pure commitment were the backbone of this team’s success.
After months of games, sub-state rolled around and the ladies were blessed with a home court advantage.
Opening the tournament with a big win against Oskaloosa and a seemingly rough game against Horton; the
Lady Raiders advanced to the championship round and faced the Immaculata Raiders. After an interesting
game, the Nemaha Valley Lady Raiders were named the 3A sub-state Champs and were headed to
Hutchison, Kansas for the State Tournament.
The games in Hutch were somewhat different than what the Lady Raiders were used to, but they adapted
well in the game against Yates Center. The game verses Smith Center was a nail bitter coming down to
last second shots. The Raiders were unable to come up with a win in overtime. The team did a great job of
recovering from that loss and ended the season on a great note; a win against Hesston and a 3 rd place
finish in the 3A State Tournament.
“The team was disappointed after losing to Smith Center in the state tournament, but at that initial
disappointment fades with time, they’ll all remember what a great season the school record of 25 wins
represents,” Head Coach, Mr. Terpening, said.
