In this year the Raiders had big shoes to fill as they had lots of youth but little experience. The Raiders started off the season with back to back losses to Centralia and Hiawatha. The Raiders then stepped up and played a tough game against Jeff West in what resulted as a two point victory for NV. They then lost four games in a row to the teams of Maur Hill, Holton, Sabetha, and Royal Valley. The Raiders then once again played a hard fought game and beat Horton. This kept the Raiders in the hunt for Bi-districts. That was short lived as in the next week the Raiders lost their final game to ACCHS. The Raiders ended the year 2-7 and even though the record looks disappointing the team should have nothing to be ashamed of because they were in almost every game they played. Sometimes things just don’t swing your way.

This year’s seniors were Martin, Jared, Matt, Phil, Todd, Russell, and Eric. These seniors were called on to step up into key positions for the Raiders and to make big plays. They were successful on many counts but fell just short in several games. Several of the seniors earned All League honors. These honors were given to Martin for Defensive Line, Jared for Tight End, and Phil for Defensive Back.

The 1998 season for the Nemaha Valley Raiders proved indeed to be a one with many ups and downs. The Raiders started the season with early losses to Centralia and Hiawatha and then barely squeaked a 3-0 victory past Jeff West. After that the Raiders picked up the pace momentarily as they cruised by a struggling Maur Hill team. This seemed to be a pivotal turning point for the Raiders but then the next week they suffered a Homecoming loss to Holton and then another loss the following week to arch rival Sabetha. The District play opened up with a loss to Royal Valley but then the Raiders turned around and crushed Horton. The following week the Raiders took one more stand and defeated ACCHS easily. The Raiders ended the season 4-5 but they showed that their record doesn’t reflect their effort.

The Raiders this year were led by many seniors. These seniors were Eric, Clint, Brent, Tim , Ross, Kevin, Danny, Buddy, James, Brian, Andy, Steven, David, and Neil. Several of these Raiders along with one or two juniors were also elected to the All League team.

The biggest loss of this season though was not any defeat in a game or any injury. It was the loss of two Raider coaches. After the season ended Coach Hynek, who coached the Varsity Defense, and Bissitt, who coached the offensive and defensive line, resigned from football. These were very big losses and forced many changes for the teams of the next few seasons.

The season started off on a down note for the Raiders as they lost two early games to rivals Sabetha and Holton. Things looked bad but the Raiders didn’t give up and turned the tides as they went on to win 6 in a row to make it into Bi-Districts. There they met Pleasant Ridge but thanks to a dazzling defensive display by the Raiders they were able to take the 13-0 victory and move on to the Regionals. It was then that they met their fate. In Regionals they played an overpowering Silver Lake team who throughout the season was picked to win it all. The predictions were correct as Silver Lake dominated the game, winning 14-68, and moved on to win the 3A State Championship. Even with this dramatic loss the Raiders still put on a impressive display and had much to be proud of for their season.

This season the Raiders returned many starters including seniors Michael, Russell, Joe, Ryan , Brad, Jerett, Joe, Waylon, Joe, and Toby. The trio of Joe, Joe, and Joe led an almost unstoppable offense for the Raiders even though they lost Michael early in the season to a collar bone injury. Combined with a quick and powerful defense the Raiders looked like a team of the ages.

In a season filled with many unexpected events the Raiders proved that they could survive through adversity. Bringing back only a few starters and little or no experience was a big concern early on for the fans and the Raiders. These concerns were quickly hushed though when the Raiders won a big game against Hiawatha. They then hit a rough spot of Holton and Sabetha barely losing to both teams. They regained their composure though after a victory over Maur Hill and Royal Valley. That helped get them over another loss to Jeff West. The Raiders entered their district play and manhandled Wathena and Horton but fell just short after losing to ACCHS.

Senior leadership is always a big factor in a football and this year was no exception. Leading the pack this year were seniors Travis, Brad, Tony, Trevor, Shaun, Jasonr, and Jason. Though there were only a few this year they were able to be the driving force in the Raider football team.

With a schedule chalk full of tough league teams and just as tough out of league teams the Raiders pushed and squeezed through the season. Besides the losses to Hiawatha and Royal Valley the Raiders swept the league play. Victories over rival Sabetha and a tough Maur Hill team helped boost the Raiders in District play. In fact, they defeated all three teams in Districts and moved on to play Immaculata in the Bi-District game. There the Raiders lost a close and bitter game 13-16. The Raiders though did not have to lower their heads because they showed what true Raider spirit was.

The Raiders needed strong senior support this year with the tough schedule that they faced. They received this help from seniors Matt, Darrin, Kevin, Mark, Ryan, Shawn, Ty, Greg, Glendon, and Aaron. These seniors helped lead the Raiders to the 7-3 record that they justly deserved.

Though they played with many young players on the team the Raiders were able to keep their heads high as they cruised to a 6-3 record. A lost early to Sabetha was quickly removed from memory by a crushing victory over Hiawatha. Royal Valley made themselves known with a victory over the Raiders who then won two straight before a loss to Jeff West in the first game of districts. They then went on and won the last two games of district play but failed to go on.

The seniors that were out this year were so vital to the football team. They brought experience and leadership and helped the younger players understand their assignments. The seniors for this year were Brian, Jarbae, K.C, John, Jamie, Shane, Brent, Jeff, Jesse, Brandon, Dustin, Ryan, and Doug. They showed what Raider pride was all about.

The Raiders this year were supposed to come out and clobber their opponents and they did just that. Coming into the season ranked 1st in 3A the Raiders pushed all season long losing only to Sabetha in the regular season. The biggest win of the season would probably had to have been the victory over Maur Hill who went on to win the 4A Championship. The Raiders tied with Sabetha and Maur Hill in the Big Seven for 1st place. Taking home a victory from all three district games the Raiders advanced to the bi-districts where they suffered defeat at the hands of a strong Rossville team. The Raiders ended the season at a strong 9-2.

The seniors of this strong Raider team were Mark, Greg, Travis, Jason, Brad , Doug, Jeff, Roger, Shawn, and Brent. These men pushed the whole team to further make themselves better and in doing so established the 9-2 record.

Most young teams usually give up and don’t give it their all. That was not the case for this young Raiders team. Though inexperienced and young this team was able to pull off win after win. It did not look that way at first though as the Raiders dropped the first two to Rossville and Maur Hill. They then won three straight before a devastating loss to Sabetha. They quickly got back on track, though, and won the next four to advance to the bi-districts. There they face a powerful Silver Lake team who won the game easily.

When a team is as young as this the seniors that you do have out become very important and vital to the team’s success. The seniors leading the team this year were Jason, Ryan, Doug, Brian, and Tom. With the leadership of these five men the Raiders posted a 7-4 record.

When a team has the heart and drive to win size is no longer the most important factor in the game. This year’s team was not a big team, not by a long shot. They did, though, have the heart that these other big opponents did not. This helped them fire off early, winning their first two games of the season. During this the team suffered several injuries which became a big part in the loss to Maur Hill in the third game. The Raiders bounced back and beat ACCHS in a nail biter and beat Hiawatha the following week. They then faced the number two ranked team in 4A, Sabetha. They fought hard but finally broke down for their second loss of the season. This did not seem to slow this Raider team as they cruised through district play. That gave them a birth to bi-districts where they suffered their third defeat of the season, losing to a powerful Immaculata team.

The seniors were the ones that gave this Raider team the heart to push on through any loss and to be able to stay alive in every game. These seniors were Chris, Mark, Kyle, Brad, Jason, Brian, Norman, David and Tom . They helped this year’s team post a 7-3 record when everyone said that they were overmatched. They proved that the heart to win is much more important than having the size to win.

A season is not defined by how many wins or losses you have its defined by who you win and lose to. The Raiders proved that they could play against anyone and beat all the odds. They began the season with four consecutive wins, beating all the opponents handedly and only allowing 12 points through that stretch. They then suffered a tragic loss to Hiawatha. This awakened the Raiders though as they had to play the number one ranked team in 4A, Sabetha. In a hard fought game the Raiders prevailed, winning by two. This boosted the Raiders as the following week the Raiders crushed the number two ranked team in 3A, Jackson Heights, in the first round of district play. They then went on and won their last two district games to move on to bi-districts where they would meet Immaculata. The Raiders proved their strength by stomping the Immaculata team but then lost out in Regionals against future State Champs Silver Lake.

The strength of the Raiders team this season was their seniors. They provided experience and the talent needed for the Raiders to win. The seniors this season were Joe, Fred, Shawn, Gerald, Scott, David, Joe, Brian, and Jerry. They were what made the Raiders 9-2 this season and gave them bright hope for the future.
