The Raider football team executed well throughout the year. The defense held their opponents to fewer points than last year and the offense made more things happen when running and throwing the ball. The season was not what everyone had hoped it to be, but the team always gave 100% on both sides of the ball. The football team also overcame many obstacles this year.

Dedication. Determination. Desire. With a very low number of football players this year, the Nemaha Valley Raider football team had to overcome many obstacles.
At practice this year many people tried new and different positions due to the number of players. The team came to practice everyday with positive attitudes and prepared to find a way to become better than they were the day before.
The football team displayed numerous skills such as: leadership, encouragement, will power, confidence, and motivation. Some individuals felt a little more pressured than others.
“Being a team leader and getting the team prepared to go against anything was hard,” Craig Noland, sr., said.
A couple underclassmen were able to step in and assist the team both on offense and defense.
“I was thinking they were a lot bigger than me and I didn’t know what I was doing,” Charlie Strathman fr., said.

This year started with everyone wondering what the year was going to be like. The Raiders returned many lettermen who got in on a lot of action the year before. After a successful season the year before this year’s seniors were ready to do the same. The Raiders started off the season with two straight wins over Jeff West and Wamego. Then they lost two straight to Hiawatha and Holton. They recovered the next week beating Maur Hill in a tough defensive battle. They lost the next week to Sabetha in double over time. They went into districts winning three in a row over Royal Valley, Horton, and ACCHS. They were District Champs. They went on to play Bi-Districts where they lost to Imaculata. The Raiders ended the season 6-4 which was a little improvement over last years 5-5. The Raiders fought through many injuries throughout the season, but managed to get over them and end with a successful season.
This years seniors showed a lot of leadership and how not to give up when things aren’t going your way. The seniors this year were Curt, Loren, Joe, Travis, David, Chris, Kevin, Cameron r, Jared, and Brice. These seniors showed a lot of heart in every game never giving up and will be missed.

Football is a game of survival. Only the strongest survive they say. The best move on as the others stay at home and wish they were the best. This year the Raiders became one of those teams the others wished to be. Though the record of 5-5 doesn’t show it, the Raiders proved to be one of the dominating teams in 3A football. With a schedule consisting of powerhouse 4A teams such as Holton, Hiawatha, Sabetha, and Wamego, the Raiders learned to play with the best. This became critical as te Raiders swept past District play. In Bi-Districts, the Raiders played a hard fought game, but were handed their last loss of the season. The Raiders used their determination, dedication, and desire to climb back into the ranks of the elite in 3A football. They proved that the Raiders have gone beyond the rest.
This year the Raiders were led by many seniors. Which were Jeff, Eric Alex, David, Bryce , Kellen, Kurt, Andrew, Shelton, Barry, Tom, Justin, and Derek. These seniors helped to bring back the tradition that the Raiders are used too.

In this year the Raiders had big shoes to fill as they had lots of youth but little experience. The Raiders started off the season with back to back losses to Centralia and Hiawatha. The Raiders then stepped up and played a tough game against Jeff West in what resulted as a two point victory for NV. They then lost four games in a row to the teams of Maur Hill, Holton, Sabetha, and Royal Valley. The Raiders then once again played a hard fought game and beat Horton. This kept the Raiders in the hunt for Bi-districts. That was short lived as in the next week the Raiders lost their final game to ACCHS. The Raiders ended the year 2-7 and even though the record looks disappointing the team should have nothing to be ashamed of because they were in almost every game they played. Sometimes things just don’t swing your way.
This year’s seniors were Martin, Jared, Matt, Phil, Todd, Russell, and Eric. These seniors were called on to step up into key positions for the Raiders and to make big plays. They were successful on many counts but fell just short in several games. Several of the seniors earned All League honors. These honors were given to Martin for Defensive Line, Jared for Tight End, and Phil for Defensive Back.

The 1998 season for the Nemaha Valley Raiders proved indeed to be a one with many ups and downs. The Raiders started the season with early losses to Centralia and Hiawatha and then barely squeaked a 3-0 victory past Jeff West. After that the Raiders picked up the pace momentarily as they cruised by a struggling Maur Hill team. This seemed to be a pivotal turning point for the Raiders but then the next week they suffered a Homecoming loss to Holton and then another loss the following week to arch rival Sabetha. The District play opened up with a loss to Royal Valley but then the Raiders turned around and crushed Horton. The following week the Raiders took one more stand and defeated ACCHS easily. The Raiders ended the season 4-5 but they showed that their record doesn’t reflect their effort.
The Raiders this year were led by many seniors. These seniors were Eric, Clint, Brent, Tim , Ross, Kevin, Danny, Buddy, James, Brian, Andy, Steven, David, and Neil. Several of these Raiders along with one or two juniors were also elected to the All League team.
The biggest loss of this season though was not any defeat in a game or any injury. It was the loss of two Raider coaches. After the season ended Coach Hynek, who coached the Varsity Defense, and Bissitt, who coached the offensive and defensive line, resigned from football. These were very big losses and forced many changes for the teams of the next few seasons.
