The team of 1980 was another team that carried on the Raider tradition. Leading the team that year were seniors Larry, Roger, John, Steve, Mike, Craig, Duane, Eric, Brad, Jack , Roger, and Terry. This team produced seven people who were either All League or Honorable Mention. The people that made All League were Mike, Roge, Eric, Craig, and Matt. The people who receive Honorable Mention were Rick and Larry. Along with these honors two Raiders, Eric and Mike, were voted All State Honorable Mention.

This team finished the season 6-3. They also finished second in the Big Seven League with a 4-2 record. Probably the most spectacular game of the year was the Homecoming game against Hiawatha. In that game the Raiders were trailing by one point with only 34 seconds to go. The Raiders ended up kicking the game winning field goal and handed Hiawatha its only loss of the year as they went on to win the 4A Championship.

Hard work and dedication is what makes a team one that deserves recognition no matter what their record may be. The Raiders this year showed the exact meaning of these things as their team exploded into the year, taking each team by storm. In the first three games the Raiders outscored their opponents an astonishing 86-6. They then had to play a strong oppenent in Hiawatha. In a close game the Redskins were able to pull off a one point victory over the Raiders. The Raiders did not pout over this defeat though as they defeated Sabetha and ACCHS to get playoff hopes alive. Then they had to face the mighty Maur Hill team. In a long, defensive game the Ravens defeated the Raiders 6-0. This ended the Raiders hopes to moving past districts. The Raiders did not hold their heads down, though, for they went on to win the last two games of the season like the true champions that they are.

The seniors this year were Gerard Haverkamp, Roger Heideman, Steve Medill, Galen Niehues, Tom Robke, Kevin Robke, Chris Vitt, and Chris Henry. These seniors provided the leadership need for the team to cruise to a 7-2 record for the season.

They then lost the third game to Maur Hill but bounced back and won three in a row. Things were looking good for the Raiders but then defeat came. The Raiders dropped the last three games of the season, crushing any hopes of making it to Bi-District play. The team did play strong, though, and deserve just as much respect as a team that won the State Championship.

After a strong season the year before the Raiders had a lot of expectations that were placed on them. The Raiders lived up to these expectations and then some. The Raiders cruised through the first part of their schedule taking Alma, B&B, Shawnee Heights, Hiawatha, Sabetha, Effingham, and Maur Hill. The Raiders played a tough Holton team which they lost to by four points. The Raiders bounced back and completely wiped out Wathena which let them advance to Bi District play. There the Raiders defeated Marmaton Valley. The next game was against Silver Lake, always a tough opponent. The Raiders prevailed though and advanced to Regionals where they defeated Oskaloosa. There was only one game now between the Raiders and advancing to state. The Raiders were stopped there though as Cherryvale defeated them by six.
