In many sports, people run to keep in shape so they can play to the best of their ability. In cross country, the athletes are there to run.

The Nemaha Valley Cross Country team has worked hard to progress throughout the season. They started their season with a meet at Marysville. This year, the team introduced five new runners. All of them competed in this week’s meet at home.

“Before the season started I thought cross country was going to be borin, but as the season progressed, I’ve realized it was more exciting and interactive.” Todd Heinen, fr. said.

Their hard work was reflected by the times that were recorded by each runner at the end of the year.

Running across a muddy golf course in puring rain and near freezing temperatures; just another year for the Cross County team.

This season presented numerous difficulties for the team. Experience was gained in the first meets, culminating in a 1st place medal for the  boys at the NV Invitational. They placed well in several other meets throughout the year.

The girls’ squad was plagued with too few numbers again this year, and competed as a team in few meets. Individual accomplishments and goals were high though, and all girls ran well.

“It was a fun year, even though there were snakes,” Paula Hermesch, soph., remarked.

The efforts of the runners weren’t enought to make it to sate, but the season was satisfactory and enjoyed by all of its members.

Girls Team: Ashley K., Paula H., Amanda H., Stacey H., Vanessa F., Diana S., Ashley R. and Amy G.

Run hard or run home, the theme that describes this year’s team very well. Determination and will power have brought the team together adn helped them be successful. It’s been a great season. This group has completed a lot of team goals and made improvements individually.

“This is my seventh year as the Cross Country coach at Nemaha Valley. I always tell the runners that cross country is really a unique sport. Because we re such a small group, we are more like a family than a team. Not very many people can run three miles every day, sometimes even more than that.  Everyone knows each other, along with each person’s aches and pains.” Coach Jon Thomas, said.

“I lvoe it. I am able to compete with people of equal ability.” Jeremy Stallbaumer, soph., said.

Cooperation goes into making a good team and they definitely did a great job!
